Munro Martin Parklands

The redevelopment of Munro Martin Parklands is a significant improvement to the cultural opportunities for the citizens of Cairns and the many visitors to the city. It is an exciting addition to the Cairns Performing Arts Precinct suitable for a wide range of events from high profile performances to picnics and quiet visits to the park. A spectacular range of custom-designed arbours display the variety of unique tropical vines and plants that surround the central open park/performance space.

A flexible open space and terraced seating are provided to suit seats in banquet formation as well as formal and informal seating for performances. Tiers at the rear of the audience space provide an acoustic buffer to Sheridan St and improve sightlines.

The flexible stage suitable for a wide range of outdoors performances and events forms the central focal point to the park, and caters for the specific needs of local arts organisations and major touring companies including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Oz Opera among others.

The design of the events areas is integrated into the Tropical Garden aesthetic. The stage is framed by a unique green proscenium, a large highly vegetated green wall which is seen as being hollow to allow performers to move through the wall and emerge in surprising ways. The intent is for the stage to be an interesting and accessible space when not used for performances, hence it is well integrated into the walking circuit that guides you through the park.

The stage is oriented toward Sheridan/Florence St intersection to focus noise away from residential
Properties. The rear of stage is solid to provide acoustic separation.
