Mission Beach, Far North Queensland
The central building of the Aquatic Centre frames the 25m x 6-lane lap pool and offers terraced seating with panoramic views of the adjacent rainforest and mountain backdrop. This design ensures a visually engaging and immersive experience for users. The hydrotherapy pool and café are also located within this main structure, which houses essential amenities, administration areas, and various support spaces, including break-out areas, storage, and plant rooms.
Architecturally, the main buildings are designed to evoke a village-like charm beneath the rainforest canopy. The large amenities and administration building is divided into smaller modules, linked by a distinctive, articulated roof. This roof design allows natural light to penetrate at different levels and features pop-up sections that create an upper-level canopy, providing filtered light and ventilation to non-air-conditioned spaces.
The master plan supports the new aquatic facilities and enhances the surrounding sporting precinct. It includes additional parking and provisions for a potential new bowls rink. The design celebrates Mission Beach’s tropical character by integrating and enhancing existing vegetation, highlighting the town’s natural beauty.
This project is the result of over fifteen years of collaboration between the Cassowary Coast Regional Council and the Mission Beach community, with joint funding from the Australian Government through the National Stronger Regions Fund and the Queensland Government’s Building Our Regions program.
