Townsville, North Queensland
The new building at the Pimlico campus is a state-of-the-art music facility featuring specialized acoustically treated practice rooms, small informal performance spaces, and multi-purpose general learning areas.
The existing music learning spaces needed renovation. An expansion was required to accommodate the growing demand for creative education and the school’s expanding ‘Excellence in Music program. The design of the new building considered various teaching and learning methods and spatial requirements to ensure the seamless operation of the new music precinct.
The atrium, which links the old and new sections, serves as the informal heart of the building. It is envisioned as a flexible space for collaboration, display, individual learning, and performance. A series of small practice rooms and larger learning areas are arranged around this central core, with the general learning areas (GLAs) at the northern end of the building able to be reconfigured into larger spaces as needed.
A small hub providing student services was incorporated to facilitate easier preparation and communication among staff. This arrangement supports professional development and creates opportunities for learning and mentoring between faculty members.
The music block, located at the northern drop-off/pick-up zone, acts as a secondary entry point into the school, offering a distinctive and orienting feature. By using materials such as red brick and a colour palette that complements the existing built environment at Pimlico SHS, we created a contemporary building that harmonizes with the adjacent structures. CA Architects were engaged as Principal Consultants/Architects, providing services including master planning, architecture, and interiors.
