Cairns, Far North Queensland
The overall objective of the project is to create spaces that provide an experience and act as a destination for Cairns.
Overall spaces are designed to be exciting, rather than sophisticated, with openness, activeness, colours, materials and furnishings playing a crucial part in creating atmosphere and instilling a unique local identity with a distinctive design.
163 Abbott consists of 210 hotel suites and 110 apartments which seamlessly share the ground floor hotel foyer, common meeting spaces and food and beverage.
The apartments have been designed with the alfresco concept in mind. This emerging apartment type addresses the desire for natural ventilation and light whilst achieving building code compliance and reducing overall built form and embodied energy.
Large openings provide good breeze penetration to the entire space and a balustrade set just outside the doors for compliance. This concept is very different to traditional apartments where a balcony adds depth, light penetration to the rear of the room is poor, and the depth of natural ventilation to the internal parts is limited.
