Proserpine, North Queensland
The building entry extends seamlessly from a ramped section of the sidewalk up into a grand community space that elicits a sense of excitement. The space continues through the building onto a grassed public area, which provides a respectful connection between the Entertainment Centre, the existing context, and neighbouring public buildings.
The shaded verandah to the front and side of the building is cool and breezy on a hot day and affords seating and respite as a contribution to the streetscape, with spaces for the community to gather, linger, and share stories. With its flexible opportunities for community use, this building embodies the collaborative process from which it has resulted.
Delivered through funding by three levels of government and a collaboration between two architecture practices, the building gives back to the Proserpine community some of what was taken from them during Cyclone Debbie.
