Freshwater Residence

Freshwater, Far North Queensland

The transformation of an 80s-style brickwork house into a modern home for a young, active family exemplifies a thoughtful reimagining of space and function.

Set on 3 acres along the hill slopes of Cairns, with sweeping views of the ocean and cane fields, the Freshwater Residence has been redefined as a sophisticated tropical retreat, emphasising natural light, cross-flow ventilation, and seamless integration of indoor and outdoor living.

The original structure, characterised by small, disconnected volumes, has been skillfully reorganised and expanded to include a spacious, sunlit living and entertaining area. Here, fully retractable glass panels create a fluid connection between the interior and the front garden, offering unobstructed views of the coast.

The building is strategically divided into three distinct zones. The southern wing, encompassing bedrooms, bathrooms, a family room, and laundry, retains the existing structure while being extended to incorporate an additional bedroom and guest suite. The central core, which includes the kitchen, dining, and living spaces, is designed to maximise views of the Cairns landscape. High raked ceilings, generous glazing, and a large deck that extends over the existing pool enhance the connection between the living space and the outdoor entertainment area. The northern wing serves as a leisure zone, featuring a media and games room.

Insulated lightweight roof structures, combined with timber and steel elements, lend the residence a light and airy presence, reinforcing its harmony with the surrounding tropical environment.
