Redlynch, Far North Queensland
The original brief included the construction of a new two-story building at the end of the W and Y blocks. This building was to house two general learning areas (GLAs), two science labs, and two additional science rooms, with linking walkways connecting to the two blocks on both floor levels. As St Andrew’s College, a carefully master-planned institution had nearly reached its expansion capacity, a thorough analysis of the campus identified constraints and opportunities for future development.
After reviewing the original approach, we proposed rearranging rooms and incorporating various building components into existing teaching hubs. This redesign created a state-of-the-art science/STEM laboratory precinct within the Y block, a consolidated arts precinct featuring new pottery and textile facilities, a new building for the student support centre, and 4 additional GLAs, framed by a new outdoor area in the heart of the middle school. CA Architects collaborated closely with the college board and teachers to tailor the design to their needs. The spaces were meticulously crafted to be efficient and functional, minimising wasted construction and optimising light and ventilation. The materials, colours, and construction techniques used were inspired by the existing master plan’s colours and architectural style.
Student representatives were involved in consultation to determine the most suitable design for common spaces and the external seniors’ courtyard. Imagery and a 3D walk-through, proved valuable for discussions, communication, and teaching.
