Cairns and Cattle Street Apartments

Edmonton, Far North Queensland

The two apartment complexes, comprising 15 and 12 units respectively, were developed under the current Social Housing Programme.

Designed to integrate seamlessly into existing residential areas, these small-scale developments reflect best practices in urban planning, ensuring that public housing contributes positively to the community fabric.

Each complex features a mix of four gold-standard and two platinum-standard unit types, all one-bedroom apartments tailored to meet diverse housing needs. CA Architects initially completed the Preliminary and Schematic Design phases before the projects were tendered under a Design and Construct (D+C) arrangement. While the final outcomes retain characteristics of the original design, some design decisions were revised as the new designer strictly adhered to the Social Housing Guidelines, treating them as prescriptive rules rather than adaptable frameworks.

This approach underscores the importance of flexibility in design, especially within the context of public housing, where the goal is to balance regulatory compliance with the creation of liveable, community-integrated spaces.
