Freshwater Residence

This project involved the transformation of an 80s style brickwork house into a modern home for a young and active family.

Set on 3 acres of land along the hill slopes of Cairns with great views over the ocean and cane fields, the Freshwater Residence has been designed as a comfortable and sophisticated tropical home with natural light, cross-flow ventilation, and seamlessly merged internal and external spaces. A series of small volumes were reorganized and extended by a generous and sunny living and entertaining area where glass panels completely slide away to allow a connection through the living space to the front garden overlooking the coast.

The building can be split into 3 areas. The southern wing, including the bedrooms, bathrooms, a family room and the laundry was maintained within the existing shell and extended to incorporate an additional bedroom and a guest room. The central core incorporates the kitchen, dining, and living spaces with views over the Cairns landscape. Our emphasis was on creating an inviting living space connected to the outdoor entertainment area with high raking ceilings, generous amounts of glass and a large deck extending over the existing pool. The northern wing includes the media and games room.

The introduction of insulated light weight roof structures, timber and steel combined gives the residence a light and airy presence.
