Cairns, Far North Queensland
Positioned directly adjacent to the Cairns Bowls Club, and between Griffiths park fields 1 and 2, the facility is centred around a central bar bistro, and with bowlers lounges, coffee bar, sorts bars and gaming facilities all wrapping the facade. Administration and BOH areas are located to the south, with direct access to Gatton Street.
The site is unique, in that vistas are available on all sides. The design capitalises this, with extensive use of glass and openable doors, which overflow onto the fields and bowling green. Activation is on all sides, with the main entry off Gatton Street adjacent to the bowls club, and a secondary entrance from the existing car park off Monk Street.
Concrete, brick, and weatherboard are used as principle materials, to evoke a modern aesthetic, with nods to heritage style typical of older sporting clubs. A sawtooth roof gives a strong form, with exposed structure to create a sense of
presence. Translucent polycarbonate is also used extensively on the large outdoor canopies, to provide shading and dappled lighting to outdoor areas.
