Hotel – Old Commonwealth Bank Building

Townsville, Queensland

Occupying a building formed by combining a vacant site with the Old Commonwealth Bank building in the heart of Townsville, CA Architects have created a modern boutique hotel with retail and restaurants at ground level and a roof top bar overlooking the river.

The original brief was for the development of a public building, possibly an art space, but this was rethought and eventually became a boutique hotel; a decision with which we were in total agreement.

The proposed hotel is to have a unique experience for hotel accommodation in Townsville aimed at the business/corporate market. Located on a corner site in Townsville’s CBD between Flinders Street, Stokes Street (pedestrian promenade), & Ogden Street, it is visible to anyone travelling through the Townsville CBD. The Hotel is to incorporate an existing 3 storey building facing Flinders street (heritage listed – local listing only) and a new building facing Ogden Street. The existing heritage listed building has been complemented by a simple contemporary brick and glass building.

The ground level use is focused on retail/commercial tenancies & hotel lobby while the upper floors incorporate the use of bar/restaurant spaces, pool & hotel rooms. The interiors are carefully composed and features of the original architecture are integrated with the cool contemporary styling of rooms creating a hotel to be a celebration of culture, history, architecture and style.
