Trinity Beach, Far North Queensland
Initially envisioned as a refurbishment of the existing Special Education Unit (SEU), the project team determined that substantial upgrades were necessary to create a truly inclusive learning environment. The decision to demolish the existing structure allowed for the development of an adaptable space that met the diverse needs of teachers, parents, and students.
The new facility features classrooms designed with mobile furniture and adaptive technologies to accommodate varying individual learning needs. Teaching and break-out areas were carefully designed to provide stimulation or calm as needed throughout the day. An outdoor ‘stimulus’ shelter and a sensory room were included to support physical stimulation and quiet time, while the outdoor play spaces were thoughtfully designed to enhance motor skills development.
The Junior Precinct comprises eight general learning areas, staff spaces, practical and flexible learning zones, and generous outdoor areas on the upper level. The undercroft area was transformed into a landscaped court and outdoor amphitheatre, equipped with a large stage for performances, markets, open days, and after-school activities.
The modern buildings incorporate passive cooling design principles to ensure comfort in covered outdoor learning areas year-round. Bespoke perforated metal shading devices and vertical batten screens provide shade, enhance security, and articulate the building facades, reflecting a commitment to both functionality and aesthetic design.
